jon & jess: a summer wedding in chicago | allison ewing photography

wedding

Every wedding day I have the privilege of photographing is such an honor. But when the wedding is for two of your friends, it’s a whole new level of emotions. And last Saturday as Jon and Jessica celebrated their wedding day in downtown Chicago, I couldn’t have been happier to be there to capture each moment for them behind my camera!

First off, let me first commend all the Chicago wedding photographers that shoot there every weekend. You are the real MVPs! Even though I’ve shot in a downtown setting before, this Cleveland area wedding photographer was not used to all the tourists and other bridal parties that filled the streets every where we looked! Luckily, with Jon & Jess’s help, we had all of our photo locations scoped out well in advance and we had a limo to take us to each spot. Such a relief because I certainly wasn’t going to be driving on a Saturday in Chicago!

The weather could not have been more perfect and even though it was a bit warm, we had a completely dry day, which is all I wanted for them! I started the day with Jess and her bridesmaids while Carlyn went to hang out with the guys! This was quite the role reversal because when I second shoot for Carlyn, I’m always the one going to photograph the groom! (Side note: I could not have done this wedding without her and I’m so grateful that she was willing to travel to Chicago with me to help!) After the girls were ready, we all got in the limo and headed to the first look location at Milton Lee Olive Park. This spot was really special because it’s the same spot that Jon proposed to Jess last year. (I was lucky enough to capture the surprise proposal, too!)

After their adorable first look, we added in the bridal party for some epic shots in front of the Chicago skyline. We were a bit distracted for a few minutes though because a surprise proposal was happening a few feet away from us. Clearly it’s a popular spot!! We then headed back into the city for more portraits and then headed back to One North Kitchen for the ceremony and reception. One important thing to note about the ceremony is that my husband was the officiant! I could not have been more proud of him for the amazing job he did. I know I’m biased, but it was the perfect mix of heart felt messages and humor– which is exactly what Jon & Jess wanted.

After the ceremony, we headed back outside for a few newlywed sunset photos and let me tell you–they are my favorite!! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: you cannot beat the sunset glow for photos. From there, we headed back to cocktail hour and I got to mingle with so many of my friends from my hometown! The party continued well into the evening and even though my feet hurt and my voice was almost gone, I can proudly say I made it past midnight! (Which doesn’t normally happen after shooting a wedding!)

Jon & Jess, I could not be happier for you guys! It was such an honor that you asked me to photograph your wedding day and I’m forever grateful. I hope you enjoy a little preview of my favorite images from your wedding day! Love you both!!
